Bobby tells the boys that the manuscript was in ancient Latinate and made from human skin. But as if that wasn't creepy enough, according to Bobby, it was some sort of instruction manual to bring something from purgatory into the world, possibly to open up a passage of sorts. Now, who would have written such a manual?
Probably not God, since it's unlikely he would use human skin to write a book. But if it was a monster, then why would they suddenly use human skin to write a manual? Simply to freak out any human who laid hands on it, perhaps? The whole thing remains unexplained. Dean lands in purgatory at the end of season 7, and then makes a come back in season 8 using a human portal that allows humans to pass back onto earth. It is understandable that the writers had to find a way to bring Dean back for yet another season but to be honest, it makes little sense for God to have created a portal for humans in purgatory.
What were the chances of a human getting sucked into that dark, terrifying dimension in the first place? God could hardly have accounted for the busybody Dean Winchester millions of years ago when he would have created purgatory! Not only did God apparently leave an escape hatch for humans in the event of one turning up in purgatory, but he also created ways to open its gates for some reason. Crowley and Castiel manage to open the door to purgatory when they team up to mine souls.
The dragons also open up a passage from purgatory to bring Eve into the earth. Yes, as mentioned above, it is unlikely that God left that manual, but somehow, inexplicably, it existed. Then again, when Castiel was saved by the battalion of angels from heaven, they managed to enter purgatory somehow.
Open at last! After Death agrees to engineer another lunar eclipse, Dean uses the same ritual and blood to reopen a portal to Purgatory, allowing all the monstrous souls inside Castiel to return - except those of the Leviathans.
When Dick Roman is killed using the ritual from the Word of God , it opens a portal back to Purgatory which transports Dean and Castiel there. Apparently in case humans ever accidentally got transported there, God put in a portal that humans could use to escape, but no other monster could use. Benny leads Dean and Castiel to the location of the portal which someone had told him and it opens in reaction to Dean's presence. Carrying Benny's soul in his arm, Dean is able to make it through just before it closes, allowing him to later resurrect the vampire, but Castiel purposely lets go, wanting to stay.
It is unclear if an angel would have made it through the portal anyway. Angels were able to travel into Purgatory if necessary to rescue beings as they did with Castiel, but this cost the lives of a number of angels. How they were able to enter Purgatory was not revealed.
Reapers can travel back and forth from Purgatory at will and can take mortals with them. Along with the portal to Earth, a hidden portal exists to Hell that acts as a "backdoor" into the realm.
Rogue reapers use this to transport souls between Earth and Hell for a price and Sam uses it to rescue Bobby Singer. The archangel Michael was effortlessly able to open a twelve-hour portal to Purgatory with just a snap of his fingers even while restrained by the angel cuffs.
After resurrecting Samuel Campbell , Crowley has him tracking down high-ranking creatures, especially Alphas , so that he can question them about the location of Purgatory. Crowley says he is interested in Purgatory for "development purposes. Location, location, location. I'm a developer. Purgatory is vast, underutilized, and Hell adjacent, and I want it.
Crowley tortures and interrogates the Alpha Shapeshifter for Purgatory's exact coordinates. The Alpha refuses to reveal its location, claiming ignorance, so Crowley angrily retaliates by decapitating it with a sword. Later in the episode, Crowley appears to be killed when Castiel burns a pile of old bones.
Death encourages Dean to continue his and Sam 's current investigation. He is most likely referring to their investigation into Crowley's pursuit of Purgatory. He also tells him that "it's about the souls. You throw away your life because you've come to assume that it will bounce right back into your lap. The human soul is not a rubber ball. It's vulnerable, impermanent, but stronger than you know and more valuable than you can imagine Right now you're digging at something.
The intrepid detective. I want you to keep digging, Dean It's about the souls. Purgatory is revealed not only to be the place where supernatural beings go after death, but also to be the place where the " Mother of All" is located. A group of dragons are collecting virgins in an attempt to raise the Mother from Purgatory and allow her to walk the Earth once again. Sam and Dean discover an ancient manuscript made of human skin that Bobby ultimately deduces is a manual for accessing Purgatory and bringing forth Eve.
Toward the end of the episode, this plan is carried out by the remaining dragons, who use the knowledge gained from the manuscript to open a door to Purgatory. They take one of their captives and throw her into the fiery chasm below. Out of the portal, the girl rises again as Eve. In a flashback, Crowley convinces Castiel that if they find Purgatory they can split the souls inside, so that Castiel can defeat Raphael and Crowley can secure his position as the leader of Hell.
In the present, Crowley is dissecting Eve for clues that might lead them to Purgatory, but to no avail. He insists that if Eve were alive, and not killed by the Winchesters, she could have led them there.
This was proven by the fact Dean was able to take his blade out of Purgatory. Purgatory has at least some unique plant life some as the Leviathan Blossom which only grows in the realm and is a key ingredient for the spell to trap a Primordial Entity such as God or the Darkness. According to Death , when God realized his first beasts, the Leviathans , could threaten the survival of his other creations, he created Purgatory as a prison to isolate them.
Sometime after, Purgatory began to contain an ancient and powerful entity called Eve. Exactly how she came to exist and if she really originated in Purgatory or was simply sent or imprisoned there is unknown, although the Alpha Vampire has implied that she was related to the Leviathans in some way.
Before being locked up, Eve gave life to her firstborns, the Alphas of different species of monsters. Eventually, Eve and her progeny became associated with Purgatory, and it became the destination of their souls when they died on the mortal plane. In Purgatory, the souls of the monsters are fated to prey on each other for eternity. It appears that when a monster soul dies in Purgatory, they are dead for good. There are estimated to be million souls in Purgatory. This multitude of souls were sought by the King of Hell, Crowley , and the seraph Castiel , who both agreed to work together and use the power of the souls to secure their own respective positions after the aversion of the Apocalypse left a power vacuum.
This attracted the attention of a very angry Eve, who was at first content with the natural order but was convinced that she needed to protect her children and her realm.
She began to arrange for her children to create armies of their own and to summon her to Earth. This dragged Purgatory into a three-way power struggle, along with Heaven and Hell. Eve planned to turn all human souls into monsters in order to increase the power of her realm and to deplete Crowley of future resources.
However, the struggle resulted in Eve's death. Castiel later successfully opened a portal to Purgatory and absorbed all the souls in there as well as the Leviathans. After his body began to deteriorate under the strain of the souls he had absorbed, he reopened the portal and returned all the souls to Purgatory, but some of the Leviathans clung onto Castiel's vessel and thus did not return to Purgatory. Dean later teamed up with a vampire named Benny in order to find an " escape hatch " created by God in case humans ever got stuck in Purgatory.
The two located Castiel and teamed up with him to escape, fighting off monsters and Leviathans that attacked them along the way. Eventually, they reached the portal which opened when it sensed Dean's presence. Dean absorbed Benny's soul into his arm.
However, while Dean made it through the portal before it closed, Castiel, who may not have been able to make it out anyway as he is not human or a former human, stayed behind as he wished to do penance. Castiel was later rescued by an incursion of angels sent by Naomi which she said cost many angels their lives. Like Jensen and Dean, fans of the show also fell in love with the grittiness and constant fight that existed in purgatory. Dean thrives in purgatory, continuing to have flashbacks of his time there as recently as Season Ten.
After years spent hunting monsters on Earth, Dean was free to hunt without any hint of emotional fallout. Purgatory is a constant battle, and Dean had always been raised a soldier. Does embracing the purity of purgatory make Dean a monster?
