Main reason why electric bulb is filled with nitrogen or argon instead of air is that the bulb contains closed glass chamber with inactive inert gas called Argon. Glass chamber in bulb gets filled with the air with presence of oxygen causing filament to burn to react with oxygen. Originally, there was no gas inside of a traditional light bulb. Instead, a vacuum was created to allow air to oxidize the filament when heated. Skip to Content Home Contributing Why is argon gas used to fill light bulbs?
Inhalation of argon in excessive amounts can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness, and death. Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Argon has not been tested for its ability to cause cancer in animals. Argon is a noble gas like helium which means that it is completely inert. Argon will not readily react with any other substance. Since it is such a small percentage of the atmosphere Argon is many times more expensive than Nitrogen. Argon gas is colorless, odorless and non-flammable.
It is non-toxic…. Material Safety Data Sheet. Gaseous Argon. In addition to the oxygen and the nitrogen we respire, there is a gas that you may never have heard of that we also breathe in and out in every breath.
