There is some uncertainty about the origin of the word Pyg. It is believed that the path was named after Pen y Gwryd Hostel by climbers who stayed there. Another possible origin is that the path was named after Bwlch y Moch the pass of pigs since the path crosses it, as it is sometimes spelled as Pig in English. Or it could have been named Pyg due to the fact that this was a path used to carry pyg black tar from the Britannia Copper Works in Cwm Glaslyn.

The car parks for the Watkin and Rhyd Ddu paths may be quieter, and Llanberis the village at the foot of the mountain usually has plenty of parking.

The Snowdon Sherpa bus links the various starting points and is a useful way to get around from Llanberis. Please don't park along the roadside. If you don't fancy driving, you can catch a train to Bangor or stations along the North Wales coast railway then onwards by bus or taxi. Mountains are fickle things. What starts off as a sunny day at the bottom can rapidly turn into ice-cold winds, heavy rain and thick mist halfway up. There is usually a chilly breeze at the summit — welcome on a hot day, but not quite as pleasant in the rain.

Be prepared for drastic changes in the weather and make sure you check the forecast before you go via the Met Office Snowdon Summit forecast. The motion was put forward in April by Gwynedd councillor John Pughe Roberts, who also wanted the national park referred to by its Welsh name, Eryri, and not Snowdonia. He believed it would be "a real chance to make a statement on the need to protect our indigenous Welsh place names", according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Previous efforts have been made to drop the English forms, including one from language group Cymuned in The group claimed the area only became known as Snowdonia due to Victorian day-trippers. The park has confirmed it was presented with an online petition with signatures from "around the world". Welsh language campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith said the change would provide a suitable response to the recent trend of anglicisation in parts of Wales.

During its meeting in April, a vote saw authority members decide not to consider the motion due to a group already being appointed to look at the issue.
